Assuming the DVRs would work at all without a provider service, you don't get the full functionality of the DVR without the subscription to the service. The main advantage of a DVR like TIVO (which I have had for over 6 years) is that it is updated daily with program schedule information for at least 10 days out. All you have to do is select programs that you want to record on a regular basis and it handles the rest. If the program is not on one week, it won't try to record it. If the program changes time or length one week, the DVR recognizes it and records it correctly. You can even indicate if you want only first run or repeats as well.
