The R stands for Recordable, and RW stands for Re-Writable. If you have a DVD burner on your computer, then you can burn DVD's in those formats. On DVD-R's, you can only record data on there once, and then the disc is "locked" - no more data can be placed on it and old data can't be fully erased. DVD-RW's, on the other hand, are able to record data over the course of several burning sessions - say you have one movie on a DVD-RW, then decide to put another one on there. If there is enough space left on the disk, then you can add more. Considering you put this question under the category of TiVO, I would assume you may be having trouble playing those DVD formats - my only advice is to consult your manuals to see if they support burned discs.
