what is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R?

DVD+R and DVD-R are merely competing formats, and there is very little that separates them.

DVD-R is the older of the two developed by Pioneer and approved by DVD Forum (The DVD Forum is an international organization composed of hardware, software, media and content companies that use and develop the DVD format).

DVD+R was developed by the DVD+RW Alliance (a consortium of leading manufacturers like Sony, Matsushita, Thomson, Phillips, Yamaha etc) and is not considered official by the DVD Forum.

There are drives in the market that can read and write both formats and such drives are identified as DVD +/- RW. Hope this helps ... two competing formats. it's silly. sort of like VHS and BETA, if you're familiar. What's even more silly now is that we have BluRay and HD-DVD.... what geniuses they are. DVD-R (pronounced as DVDR or DVD "dash" R) is a DVD recordable format. A DVD-R has more storage capacity than a CD-R, typically 4.7 GB (or 4.38 GiB) instead of 700 MB, although the capacity of the original standard developed by Pioneer was 3.95 GB (3.68 GiB). Pioneer has also developed an 8.54 GB dual layer version, which appeared on the market in 2005. A DVD-R can be written to only once, whereas a DVD-RW (DVD-rewritable) can be rewritten multiple times. DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W are physically pretty much the same discs, but how the data is stored onto them is different -- DVD+R/W's method is slightly more technically advanced than DVD-R/W's. DVD+R/W discs cost appx 2-4 times more than DVD-R/W discs. Both discs work on regular DVD players, DVD-ROMs and can be read with both writer types. They are both the same
