Why does my DVR (dvr is like a tivo) have a USB hookup on it?

I use the USB port on my dvr to attach a wireless reciever so I can transfer programs to my computer. So you can record streaming internet media through a server. Its so they can hook into it with ease for programming or troubleshooting it. You can also get USB powered devices to run on it I have seen them with a like disco ball thing hooked up and its kinda fun.

I researched and it says that Dish Network offers these small TV like things that are similar to psp I guess in a way but when you record something on the DVR you can send it to this device that I described. Depends on which DVR you have, if you have a MOXI DVR by Motorola (commonly used by Charter Communications) then the usb ports might be for storing a slideshow of your home pictures. Your best option is to talk to the provider of your service (such as your cable/satellite company, if that's who you get DVR service from.) I know that the USB port on my Motorola Moxi DVR was for linking up with your computer to store movies and shows on your computer or disks - however, Charter Communications disabled that feature. Is it a DirectTV Tivo DVR from DirectTV? If so or if it is a Tivo unit they both have USB ports on the back. I think the Tivo units USB ports work right out of the box, but DirectTV's USB ports are actually turned off as of now. DirectTV Tivo's can be upgraded pretty easily so you can use the USB ports.
The USB ports are so you can connect the DVR to a internet connection, you can set them up to a computer network.
Not to fret though if you have DirectTV Tivo, there is a company that sells kits or Tivo software that turns on the USB ports and allows for networking the DVR. The company is PTVupgrade.com
