There's already a lot of explanation on what DVRs and TiVOs are, so I'll skip to the last question. I have a DVR that has a hard drive on it. It works like a TiVO, but I don't have to pay a subscription rate on it. It will burn to a DVD, but TiVOs don't.
Because of the hard drive, I don't have to record anything to a disc that I was only going to watch once and I can edit out the commercials. Tivo records on a hard disk inside your machine,or on a network,where a dvr records to a personal disk which you can remove and if it is a dvd recordable ,you can re record over the same information and use it again much like a vhs tape. I think Tivo is a little more expensive than DVR. DVR records what you tell it to. Tivo will take what you tell it to record and make suggestions on other shows and movies you might enjoy. I like the DVR I have it is $5 a month (and you pay for whatever channel package you choose). There is 100 hours of recording time, that is with Dish Network. Last I checked Tivo was only 40 hrs of recording time and more expensive.
My DVR is not removable, it records to a chip in the player. DVR stands for digital video recorder. TiVo is a brand of DVR. It's kind of like inline skates being called Rollerblades or tissues being called Kleenex. TiVo is the most widely known brand, so people have begun to call DVRs TiVos.
