Can I record a tv programme on my pvr while watching a dvd?

Your Tivo will carry on recording your TV no matter what you're doing as long as you don't unplug the cables or switch it off. You don't have to be watching the TV for it to do it. Thus watching a DVD on a different player will have no effect - go for it. Without knowing what model you are using, at a guess, your PVR has a dvd playing (recording?) section. If it has a hard disk in it, it is likely that you can record on this whilst watching a DVD. If it has two DVD trays, you should be able to record on one DVD whilst watching the other.
Check the manual, if you don't have it, you should be able to find it (free) on the net.
