The only problem would be the possibility of running out of memory. For me, the advantages of having LARGE files to edit far outweigh the minor inconvenience of buying an adequate memory card. I mean, a 1 GB card with decent write speed is less than $50.00. Having all full sized images can mean the difference between having snapshots vs. a great photo. You never know when you might have the picture of a lifetime "hidden" in plain sight, if only you could crop it out of your main image and deal with it.
I used to use smaller files when I thought I was "just snap shooting," but I have regretted this more than a few times.
To answer your question, I'd leave it on the highest setting.
To answer with an answer you might prefer, you want to have 200-300 dots per inch for best results with printing. Let's choose 300 dpi. For 4x6, this means you want an image that is 1200 x 1800 or about 2.2 megapixels. no setting is too high, 3mega pixel is good for 81/2*11 enlargement without grain or noise 3mp will do fine unless you want to do a lot of zooming and cropping, in which case i'd spring for the 4. anything more than that is probably a lot more than you will need. Occassionally, you will find a printing service that will limit the file size of your photos. The higher the setting you use to take a picture, the larger the file size. Although there are computer programs that will shrink the size of your photo by removing megapixels, JPEG is a lossy format (it loses fidelity when compressing the photo). I would just find a better printing service rather bother with it and max out my megapixel setting.
Walmart.com is a very nice and reliable service. You can upload your photos to them and they will print them and then either ship them to your local walmart for free or ship them directly to your house at cost.
