Will the film camera be totally replaced by digital?

I still prefer film to digital. Hope film won't be obsolete one day...

I don't think so. Right now, I think there are three major market segments in the USA.

Most legacy users will go digital. It is simply a matter of time.

Disposable cameras will have a life for some to come. Only when a digital camera with decent resolution gets close to the price of the disposable + developing will the film disposables go away. As long as they are around, many places will continue to develop/print film.

Thay leaves afficianados, buffs, purists, etc. I think they will stay around and we will have a film market for a long time. But, there will be little spent on new film R&D and developing services will become much more centralized.

Like another poster said, like vinyl, I think film will stay around and have its own fan base.

I personally believe that one day film cameras will be obsolete, and will become museum pieces.Take a look at the number of film careras available just five years ago, and compare it to the number that are available in stores NOW.

The only film cameras that are plentiful are the disposable type. it's not likely that they will totally be replaced. Digital is a cheaper medium and easier in some ways, but there is still something great in the look of shooting on real film. I work with both depending on what the needs of the project are. Film cameras are already almost obsolete. There will be a few museum pieces left eventually. What we consider digital cameras will also someday become obsolete. It's the way of the world. I would think that if you look at the way music has been recorded it would give you some great insight on how cameras will go over time. Polaroid is a bit like the old phonograph recordings. They will both eventually end up in a museum. I think film cameras are more like old vinyl records. While most people dont like vinyl, I still think there is something great about listening to old recordings on the vinyl with all the pops and crackles. I think film will eventually move to this type of medium. There will be some that still love the quality of film, but most people will use digital. I dont think film will ever be completely obsolete.
