Why does my camera lens move when it faces down?
It is a zoom lens and was bought used. is is just old or maybe defective, and can it be fixed?

Because it's knackered. The older zoom lenses used grease as a hydraulic method of smoothing and slowing the lenses zoom mechanism. After several years, the grease dries up.
If it's an exceptionally good lens optically, it might be worth having the lens re-greased. I have the same problem w/ my Canon 100-300. Its a matter of how expensive the lens is and its weight. Obvioulsy, the more you pay, the less chance of this happneing (paid $300) But its the weight of the barrel thats pressing itself back down, chances are the when you face down, it slides down too. I'm going to try and take a wide rubber band and catch just the edge of the zoom ring and see if it keeps this from happeneing, at least thats a trick I've heard from about this problem, just haven't gotten around to it its called "lens creep", which is exactly as you said... the lens starts creeping (forward or back depending on position).

but better would be to get it serviced. If the service charge is very costly, then you could consider other options... like selling the lens, working with the creeping, etc.
