Why do digital cameras cost so much money?

The same reason diamonds do. A controlled market with a profit motive. cause there really good cameras. The pictures come out nice and clear, and you can take lots of pictures with out the constant worries of getting new film.
It really depends on what type of digital camera you get. Some can be pretty inexpensive. However, the cheaper ones are usually the crappiest brands. its like a little computer, with the screen and a lot of internal memory. prices are actually going down, you can get a nice basic one for 100 bucks. I don't know, but it pisses me off. Yes, you can get a cheap camera, but it won't be able to do a whole lot. Big bucks for the good stuff. Because it is a relatively new "toy" and they know people will pay it. Think about it, when VCR's came out, they were several hundred dollars. The same thing with DVD players. Now they are cheap, I saw a DVD player for sale at the store the other day for $29.99, and I guarantee that it was more advanced than the ones that first came out at several hundred dollars each. It has nothing to do with the technology, just the novelty.
Give it time, it will become less of a novelty, and therefore less expensive. Because they are so good. and there resolution are the best if you get a 4 MP and beyond. well...it is about marketing and the simple fact the end-users accept the price ...
