Why do Kodak cameras come with docks when other cameras don't need them?
Are they a good thing to have or better to get a different type?

Kodak cameras don't really need them either. The docks are just an ultra simple way of downloading pictures, mainly for those who are a bit intimidated with the electronic world. Kodak targets beginners and entry level consumers, hence the docks. Other companies don't see the docks as being necessary or profitable.

I think they are good because they allow easy access to the camera memory and charging in the same device. Some docks print and that really makes it easy to get your pics quickly

It saves you the trouble of fiddeling with the power and usb cables all the time The software that came with my son's Kodak needed to be re-installed every time he needed to use it. At least one of the Spy-ware detectors he uses recommended uninstalling it.
By contrast my Lumix connects via usb as a removable drive - it can connect to any W2K or XP PC...
As a result of leaving his Kodak in the caddy & the caddy plugged in - the rechargeable battery pack doesn't seem to hold its charge. We resort to the "inconvenience" of "ordinary" rechargeable AA batteries, and a regular charger.
Kodak's seem to me to be of indifferent quality - perhaps if less money was spent on the dock - and more on the camera?
