Why Did All my Pictures Get Erased When I selected Format On Canon Rebel!?
I need help! I have a Canon Rebel and I was messing with the camera and I selected the format option through the menu and now all 245 of my pictures on my card are gone. Why did this happen?!!!!!

you should have read the manual. format is the same as format your hard disk, format your floppy disk. it erases all data. Because you reformatted your card. Unfortunately when you choose to format a card on any camera it erases the information completely. There are a few programs available that can bring back some of the information, but they tend to not work that well. If you go to http://www.download.com, and do a search in the imaging area you should come across a few programs. Because formatting your camera erases everything, darlin'!
Sorry! In any digital camera (SLR or point & shoot), the FORMAT function is used for your CF or SD Card. So when you click on FORMAT, you are erasing all the photos in your CF/SD card.
The difference between FORMAT and ERASE ALL is that ERASE ALL deletes all the pictures but may leave folders and other extras in your memory card, thus causing your CF/SD card with fragments of unusable space. Whereas FORMAT deletes EVERYTHING without fragmenting your card. It has the same concept as formatting your hard drive for a completely clean slate as opposed to just erasing the files.

Why you would even select FORMAT (when you do not know the consequences of doing so), is beyond me!!!
Besides...there usually is a very clear warning in the manual which tells you what will happen if you format your card. Formatting is clearing a storage device ready for use if there was something on there it will be erased
