Which lenses for Nikon DSLR should I buy? Talking high-end 2.8?

I'm about to buy the D80 (felt great in the store) after being advised on answers to spend the money on lenses than the body. A friend is a Canon user and recommended the following range - what would be the equivalent or recommended Nikon lenses you suggest?

He has the: 10-22mm EFS, the 24-70mm f2.8L, and the 70-200 IS F2.8L.

My main need is a good portrait lens but I travel a lot so I need more than that. I saw some comments on the 18-200 VR as well...I'm a bit confused so if anyone has some sage advice please dole it over. I'm loving Search answers, thanks Yahoo!

The Nikon equivalents are the 12-24 ($920), either the 17-55 f/2.8 ($1200) or the 28-70 f/2.8 ($1400), and the 70-200 f/2.8 ($1600).

For the standard zoom I prefer and use the 17-55. I find this range much more useful for walk around purposes. That's because after the 1.5 focal length multiplier, 28-70 doesn't provide much wide angle coverage: 28mm x 1.5 focal length multiplier = 42mm.

By the way, Canon also introduced a great 17-55 f/2.8 ($1050), but it's not an L lens - it doesn't have the build quality.

With the Nikon 17-55 (built like a tank), I personally find it hard to justify spending $900 on a 12-24 and the gap between 55mm and 70mm isn't missed. If portrait photography is important to you, consider replacing the 12-24 zoom with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4.

And finally, the 18-200 is a great travel lens. It has a list price $750, but you'll be lucky to find it for $900 due to short supply. For the convenience of this all-in-one solution, you do sacrifice image quality, build quality, and (a very usable) f/2.8 however. It wouldn't be for me, but they're selling like hot cakes.
