Nikon and Canon both have good cameras. I personally like the build quality of D50 but the colors of XT. Go take a look at the reviews, and see some sample shots to make your own decision!

The Nikon D50 would be better, it'll make you feel like a pro. photographer. I think you'll find that is like asking Ford vs Chevy. Both are excellent cameras and if you already have lenses for one brand, that should be enough reason to stick with it. If not, go play with them both. Determine the package costs of the camera and lenses you want and let that be a factor. I'm a canon guy myself and love the cameras (rebel xt and a 10D and an Elph 400 for point and shoot use). My only complaint is the tiny view screens, which canon has finally addressed with the 30D.
