I have not checked reviews, but simply based on focal lengths, the 85 mm will be better. Longer focal length lenses (such as the 85 mm) will have a more shallow depth of field at closer shooting distances, throwing the background more out of focus than shorter lenses (such as the 50 mm).
You didn't say if you are using film or digital, but the answer is still the same. The only thing is, with the smaller image size in a digital camera, the Bokeh effect will not be as great as would be possible in film or with a full sized sensor. Some folks may call this old school but, the 85mm would be the better choice (maybe even a tad longer) for one reason. Unless you are using a professional model most people get a little fidgity with a camera so close to their face, which is what you would need to do with the 50mm for portraits.
