I suggest the Canon Elura 100 - currently about $300 (maybe lower during the after-thanksgiving day sales). It's the top camcorder for 2006 for value/performance.

It uses 3 seperate chips to process the primary (red, green and blue) colors. Most consumer cameras use only one chip for all colors and this hinders the quality. Also this is just about cheapest 3ccd camera on the market and includes a microphone jack for professional quality audio. This camera is available on ebay with 2 different lenses, a tripod, case and other stuff for about $400. This camera uses a mini dv tape so that may be a drawback if you want to want to edit easily and be able to play back in a dvd player like with a dvd camcorder. I have done a lot of research for camcorders on camcorderinfo.com and I found this camera to be among the best for the price and I am about to purchase one myself. i recomend Sony digital 8
