Which is better for a no budget filmaker, a used Canon A2 or a L2? Assuming both work and cost reall

I am trying to decide on a used Canon A1 for or a L2. Both used Hi8 format. I am planning on using a Canocus 110 to transfer to the computer for editing. The L2 has had the capitors replaced/recent service.. The A1 has a bunch of goodies and a non-working extra camera for parts. The A1 is just under $300 and the L2 will be over $500. I really don't have any money and will be saraficing (for art sake) to buy either. Which is the better deal? What are the Pros and Cons of each?

Both of these camcorders are nice equipment. The L2 has a longer zoom (15X vs 10X), a removable lens, and a larger CCD but otherwise the two are fairly comparable.

Bad capacitors were a problem in many Canon camcorders of this vintage and there is no guarantee that the A1 would last ten minutes if the caps are originals. If ALL of the caps were actually replaced in you L2 then it would likely be the better, more reliable, choice between the two. If all of them have not been replaced then I would not recommend buying it.

However, I do not know why you would go with Hi8 at all. Analog is much more difficult to capture reliably and has more inherent noise in the recordings. If I were you and had such a small budget I would consider getting a used digital with the same money, either mini-DV or even Digital8. Some of the earlier Sony Digital8 camcorders, like the DCR-TRV520, were feature rich and had great color. You can find TRV520's through eBay for about $300-350. They have a 25X zoom, good focus & lens, and all the jacks you will need.

Of course all of these camcorders will have consumer grade audio circuits so you may need a pro audio adapter to have better audio control. Save your extra money for the lighting and audio accessories you will need.

Also, if by going digital you no longer need your Canopus 110, then you can convert that into about $175-200 cash as well.

WK If u don't have a lot of money to spend i suggest u get an A1.
