HD camcorders are great, but if you plan to edit the video, be prepared. Your computer has to meet certain requirements, and you need alot of space. HD isn't supported well yet for editing either. So if you plan on editing, I would suggest waiting on HD, until it gets smoothed out a bit.
In that case, I would suggest the Panasonic PV-GS500. It has 3CCDs and many other great features.
If you DO want an HD camcorder, I suggest the Canon HV10. It's picture quality is amazing. Even better than the Sony HDR-HC3!
Check out camcorderinfo.com for some great reviews. They cover everything very thorough. The best quality will be in Sony. But it will be over $1000 and even $2000. You can get a cheap camera but the quality will not be as good as lets say as a large camcorder you see some people carrying around. (like the Canon GL2) The best quality cameras will be a camera that has 3 CCD but most comsumer cameras like $100-1000 has only one CCD.

try those sites. There are two things I would look out for, either would be fine, both would be GREAT. The cheaper option is to look for one that has 3 CCD chips. If there are 3 CCD chips, it means that there is a chip for each primary colour (not to get too complicated). A lot of consumer camera's now have 3 CCD's. There are quite a few good Panasonic camera's below the $1000 mark with 3 CCD.
The other option is to look for something that gives you the option of recording in High Def. I recently bought a Sony HiDef camera, and have never seen a picture quality like it. It was over the $2000 mark, but money well spent. Even if I am not recording in hi-Def, it looks AWESOME. So my money goes on the Sony HDRHC3.
Ebay seems to be the cheapest (and I'm not saying ebay for the sake of it), the camera's are mostly brand new and come with a warranty. If you shop carefully you may pick up a real bargain. The best quality video will be made by a full spec broadcast quality high definition video camera. They should be available now for less than $100,000. Simple enough .. get yourself a HD camcorder .The difference is enormous. If you can get to a retailer ask them to demonstrate the difference between standard digital and hd digital camcorder.
