Whats the best way to light video?

I just bought a digital camcorder and want to light my subject but the regular lighting leaves the video darker than Id like it. What is the best way to light these sort of cameras? I didnt think I should get an expensive light fixture and I found that there are flourescents, HMI (whatever that means) and tungsten. What works for simple amatuer indoor video? Also I need to get up in those tight spaces......yeah, you know what I mean....lol.

If you camcorder doesn't have an accessory shoe, you can still attach an external light using a bracket such as this:

I use the Sunpak Readylight and get acceptable results.

http://www.sunpak.com/video/readylight20... First you need to choose between hot and cold lights. Then between expensive and cheap. Expensive means color uniformity and durability.. but pockets dont like the hi price tags.

I agree with you that the manufacturer lights are expensive, but some do tricks with the camera , as turning on and off autonatically, as having a receptacle or hotshoe in the camera wich is not available with some external lights. Besides, you might need a tripod or a second carry bag for a cumbersome cheap light fixture if that is what you want...

So there is not a single and unique answer for your case... just try to use all incandecent or all fluorecent lighting so your camcorder does a good color and white balance selection.
