If you plan to do video editing, miniDV is the best format.

p.s. check out the consumer written reviews, they should really help you! I have a DVD camera and I love it. It came with it's own software and I have no problems with editing and quality. I am not a technician, but it would make sense that a tape will deteriorate far quicker than a DVD.

In addition, from what I know, there is stretching in all tapes. That would further lower the quality.
