Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The hard drives have an enormous amount of storage space, usually 30 GB or higher, whereas a mini DVD usually can only hold about 1.8 GB, or about a half-hour of video.
Personally, I think that the mini DVDs are better. When the recording is finished, just finalize the DVD (the procedure varies with brands and models. Check the owner's manual of whatever you purchase.), and stick it in your DVD player. You don't need to worry about hooking it up to a computer first or having to worry about having to pay someone to transfer it. Camcorders with hard drives involve either hooking the camera up directly to the TV through the AV plugs, or connecting it to the computer and having to create the DVD from there. This method also requires that the computer have a DVD burner, which is not standard on most computers.
The only downside to mini DVD video cameras is the low recording capacity. If you are looking for convenience, the DVD cameras have a lot more to offer overall than one with a hard drive. Go with the mini hard drive. It has more space; up to 40gb vs. the 1.5 gb you'll find on a mini DVD. Plus because it is a hard drive the video's you take will be hella easy to transfer an otherwise do stuff with. Before you buy anything though, you should check out a buying guide.
